Naxos is welcoming its visitors with the “Portara”. A huge door made of marble, of the never-finished temple of Apollo. It is an area that offers its visitors a panoramic view of Naxos city, together with unique sunsets. I also have to mention the strong feeling that the area offers to its visitors due to its special energy (to be found also in other similar places on the island) springing from its 2500 years of history…
Naxos is an island that is different from all the other islands around. Because although Cyklades (the region where Naxos belong), is a dry area, Naxos is the only island with plenty of water! So apart from being the largest island it is also the most fertile in Cyklades.
Not only are many of the most beautiful beaches in Greece found on Naxos, but the interior of the island is also worth visiting. You can find from small picturesque villages that rarely see a visitor, to busy but still traditional, with shops offering Naxos products and of course tavernas. Here I also have to mention the extremely good food that you can find all around the island, based totally on local products. Homemade wines and various cheeses, together with the local meat are some of the musts that you have to try more than once, when you are in Naxos!
I have also to mention the unique nature of the island, which can cover all the tastes. Hundreds of paths in various landscapes are waiting to be explored, while numerous monuments and ancient temples are to be found almost everywhere on the island.
Last but not least are the wonderful beaches. Beaches with different “personalities”, that although sometimes, they are situated next to each other, they manage to offer a totally different feeling. And what a feeling! The colors, the shapes, the feeling of the sand, the touch of the see offer a unique experience.
There are beaches inside Naxos city, a couple of kilometers further out and then it is a never ending story. How long you want to go and how alone you want to be, is up to you. And except all these, there are some beaches and paths that no matter how good a travel book you have, you can never find them, unless someone that already knows tells you how to do it!
As well as all this, Naxos has a remarkable night life, which every year is being enriched with more bars and clubs. There are dozens of them all around the city, with their unique style, that covers all tastes, from those who want to experience the cosmopolitan style of night life to the more personal Greek way of having fun. Thus the visitors here can also choose the way that they want to spent their vacations, relaxing quietly or with busy nights!
So very briefly this is all that I have to say to you about Naxos. The rest you have to discover by yourself (ok with some help from me if you need and want it).
